Guile

For Peter.

Tumble did the golden coin over her little fingers,

As she looked slyly up toward the grocer at his figures.

'What cheer, my dear? What have you there?' he asked her with a smile.

'But a basket of your lemon cakes.' replied the darling child.

'That golden coin you tumble in your hand,' says he to she,

'Is plenty and to spare to procure those vittles for your tea.'

'Oh, thank you, sir!' she curtsied as he counted out her change,

And placed the coin atop the counter a touch outside his range.

She grinned revealing gleaming teeth and hurried out the door,

As the merry grocer reached over to get his golden score.

'What's this?' he cried. 'This coin is lighter than a baby's breath!'

'I see!' says he. 'Tis but pretty foil encasing chocolate!'
