About Me

How I Became A Reader

Cava Bodega.jpg

I remember once in primary school my class had a debate on Television VS Books, and I was bitterly disappointed when the teacher, who wouldn't let us choose our own sides, put me on the Books team. Television was, as far as I could tell, obviously superior, so it came as no surprise to me when my team lost.

I also remember doing badly in every spelling test I ever sat, and being diagnosed with dyslexia at some point. All this to say, I gave none of the adults in my life any reason to suppose or suspect that I would ever show the slightest interest in reading.

Then one day, when I was around ten years old, my mother was passing through a shop of some description, and some popular fantasy books caught her eye. She thought, for some odd reason, that I would like them: and I did. So she bought me some more books, and kept going from there. It didn't take long for my spelling, grammar, and punctuation to improve, nor for my supposed dyslexia to mysteriously vanish. I've been a reader ever since.
